Jacob Stainer was the leading maker of the Austro-German school of violin making in the 17th Century. His earliest instruments are from the 1630’s & bear a strong resemblance to that of legendary Cremonese maker Andrea Amati who is often credited with pioneering the violin we know today in its modern form. During the remainder of the 17th Century, he made numerous outstanding instruments that are often said to rival or even to have outshone the work of his contemporary Cremonese makers. Prior to the influence of Stradivari, Stainer’s legacy was unprecedented particularly throughout Venice, Florence, England, Germany & Austria.

The ‘Heritage’ range of instruments are particularly special as they are made from a CT scan of the original 1659 Stainer violin. This scan has then been programmed into our CNC Machine to carve out the separate parts of the replica instrument to a near exact degree. The top-quality maple & spruce is specifically chosen to best match the grain of the original violin. These parts are then finished by hand & assembled to form the body of the instrument by our skilled luthiers. The golden-brown varnish & antiquing is then applied by hand in a stylistic way that best reflects the original 1659 Stainer. The top-quality ebony fittings are chosen to not only match the original instrument but also to acoustically enhance the sound. Once finished, these instruments are set-up by hand in our on-site workshop. It is through a combination of this technology & traditional violin-making methods that we have been able to make a top-quality, affordable replica of this historically significant violin.

The overall sound of this violin is warm, rich & complex due to the high arching of the Stainer model.
