Violin - Lillo Salerno, 4/4, Guadagnini
This violin was made in the workshop of Lillo Salerno in 2024 in Pforzheim, Germany. Salerno lived and grew up in Pforzheim for much of his life before moving to Cremona in 1998 to study at the International School of Violin Making, graduating in 2002. He then moved on to the Violin Making School of Mittenwald, graduating in 2004. Whilst studying in Mittenwald, Salerno worked in a violin shop, followed by a number of workshops prior to opening his own. Salerno's craftsmanship shows the influence of both Italian and German violin making traditions, and he now has his own workshop in his hometown of Pforzheim where he produces master and workshop instruments, and undertakes repairs and restoration. Many of Salerno's instruments are played worldwide, including by players in the Berlin Philharmonic and professors from conservatories across Europe. This instrument comes with a certificate of authenticity and photos from the maker.
This violin is labelled "Lillo Salerno ex cremonensis (signed) / Strumento di bottega fecit anno 2024" and is based on a Guadagnini model. The body measures 335mm along the back, 161mm across the upper bouts and 196mm across the lower bouts. The back is one piece of maple, with a moderate flame and medium curl. The maple of the ribs and scroll match the back. The top is made of a finely grained spruce. The violin is finished with an amber-brown varnish and ebony fittings.
This violin has a clear and broad sound, and has no trouble projecting this character and maintaining it across all registers. At quieter dynamics, the sound has a very intimate feeling, however at louder dynamics, the sound becomes more bold, expressing more clarity and richness. This violin is most suited for a player looking to complete their HSC or upper AMEB levels, or engaging in tertiary study.
