The VA5 has a two-piece moderately flamed maple back while the top is made from spruce. This instrument is based on a Guarneri viola model & has ebony fittings. This viola has been lightly antiqued with a good cover of golden to orange-brown varnish. Klaus Clement is particularly well-known for his varnishing. The formula he uses is constantly changing & improving as he investigates the effect of the varnish on the sound of his instruments.
